Navigation Note
Clicking on most of the links on these pages will pop up a window with the image of whatever the link is.  My goal was to not overload the pages with tons of graphics.  So if you want to see an image, just click the link.  Once the image window is displayed, you can close it by clicking on the picture.  There are however, a few "regular" links to other pages.  Also, if you have have pop-up blocker software installed, you may not be able to view the images, as they appear in a "pop-up" window. You may have to disable your blocker software to see them. I promise that all you'll see in the pop-up windows is various pictures of my system and it's components -- no spam.

Thanks.

Intro
I started brewing back in the early eighties in the usual way, with a pre-packaged extract brew kit. The brew produced was "drinkable" but not great. I tried a few other kits over the next year or two. I enjoyed it, but wasn't completely impressed with the quality of my creations. Being young at the time, my interest waned and I gave up the hobby.

About ten years later my brother gave me a brewing kit for my birthday, this one a bit more complete than the original one. It came with better equipment and an extract/grains porter recipe. I was excited to get back into brewing and intrigued by this new bag of grains that was included. I set aside a Saturday and happily brewed the porter. Things went well and a couple of weeks later I tried my latest attempt. It was actually pretty good! Over the next couple of years I brewed about a dozen batches, most with very good results. Brewing was fun, but Mom wasn't impressed by cases of bottles or the "smell" of the brewing process. (Yes I was still living at home at 30, but that's a whole other story.) Once again, I got out of brewing for a while.

Well jump ahead a few years, I'm married now and my wife and I bought a house in the spring of 2000. One thing I wanted to get back into was brewing . I stumbled upon rec.crafts.brewing and started reading about this all-grain thing. Hmmm, that sounded interesting…

First All-Grain Batch
Well, I gathered as much info as I could off the Internet. I bought an 8-gallon enamel/steel canning pot, to which I attached a double-easy-masher-type-thing and a 3/8" ball valve. I then set out to brew my first all-grain batch. Things went relatively well and my IPA turned out great! Sorry to say, the wife wasn't thrilled at the all day mess in the kitchen. So, out to the garage I go. I picked up a couple of 75K BTU Camp Chef propane cookers. After all this reading and surfing I had done, I developed a serious case of "brew-system-envy." Before we go any further. You can make great beer from extracts, you can also make great all-grain beer with no more than a few plastic buckets and a big pot. The following equipment is completely optional. Why do it then? It's fun! I like to tinker, most of the fun was the challenge of figuring out how to do it.
